Both Hungary and Serbia have slid 14 positions lower on the Press Freedom Index prepared by Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières, RSF) for 2019. The Index lists 180 countries, among which Hungary occupies the 87th position (it stood at 73 in 2018) while Serbia sits at the 90th (76th in 2018). With such low ranks, both countries are now labeled “problematic,” while the situation of their media is continually worsening.

On the map above, lighter colors indicate higher press-freedom rankings and vice versa. The original analysis can be found at RSF’s website.
